The Magazine Maestra: Sarah Tomczak

Maison_Haven_Organizers_MAISON_MUSE_MainImage-Sarah-Tomczak.jpg

Sarah Tomczak has been shaping the way women think for over twenty years. A stellar career in the magazine industry has given her a sixth sense for what the modern woman wants. Tomczak cut her teeth in New York at celeb-bible, US Weekly, and since then she’s worked at a slew of publishing heavyweights, including the UK’s Daily Mail and GLAMOUR, as well as penning etiquette guides in her spare time (true story: her first book was titled ‘L is for Lady’). Now she’s at the helm of Red, the UK’s second-largest glossy magazine after Vogue. Eternally stylish (picture Jackie-O’s elegance with Marilyn’s curves), Tomczak’s real-woman appeal is one of the many reasons her tribe flocks to her Instagram feed. Her recent move to the dreamy British seaside, with her photographer husband and two gorgeous daughters, has only added to the lifestyle porn!

Onto the Q&A…

Q&A.png

The most organized part of my home is...

None of the bits that I have anything to do with! My husband is a stickler for order and cohesion and I am the opposite. He folds his clothes using a folding board and I cram mine in and shut the door before they fall out again.

Q&A.png

And the least organized is...

My baking cupboard. It’s extremely haphazard with glass jars balancing precariously on top of each other and a fine dusting of icing sugar in most corners.

Q&A.png

My secret organizing hack...

I’m big on baskets – for kids toys, Lego, hats and gloves, hair accessories, and arts and crafts. It means they always look nice on the outside despite being a jumble on the inside.

Q&A.png

My most treasured possession is...

a necklace my husband gave me for my 40th birthday. He sourced vintage charms with his initial and those of my two daughters. The ‘S’ for Sylvie was from a Victorian tie pin, and the ‘C’ for my daughter Coco was originally a crescent moon from a necklace. They’re beautiful but I also love how much time and thought went into it.

Q&A.png

My proudest career moment so far...

moving to New York to pursue a career in journalism, aged 24 and becoming the editor of Red almost two decades later.

Q&A.png

A surprising thing people don't know about me is...

I can still do the splits – a party trick I still roll out all the time!

Q&A.png

Last text I sent was to...

a neighbourhood mum to organize a play date. Editing a magazine whilst working from home and keeping the kids entertained at the same time is a constant challenge.

Q&A.png

I'm currently reading...

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

Q&A.png

My current WFH situation is...

both a blessing and a challenge. We moved to the seaside last Christmas, so working from home every day means I don’t have to commute into the city, I’ve enjoyed settling into a new place and building a community here, I’ve spent more time with my kids and husband and I’ve carved out time for myself that I never had before. But it’s challenging to lead a team and be creative and navigate an uncertain climate while alone in your kitchen, oh wait, not alone because I am homeschooling a five and an eight year-old too!

Q&A.png

My go-to dish...

changes a lot. I’ll tend to cook the same thing quite a few times and then move on. At the moment I love Diana Henry’s roasted tomatoes with fennel, pistachio nuts, yogurt, feta and herbs and Ottolenghi’s baked rice with garlic and cinnamon.

Q&A.png

First thing I do when I wake up is...

scrape my tongue with Jasmine Hemsley’s Tongue Tingler – it’s addictive!

Q&A.png

Last thing I before I go to sleep is...

two sun salutations. I read that this sequence of yoga poses stretches every muscle in your body, so I like to think I’m stretching the day away before I get into bed.

Maison_Haven_Organizers_MAISON_MUSE_InnerImage_sarah_tomzcak2.jpg
Q&A.png

I unplug by...

swimming in the sea. It’s a recent hobby that I have found myself craving, the more I do it. The combination of the cold water, being immersed so utterly in nature and the resulting endorphins is intoxicating.

Q&A.png

The mantra is live by is...

‘You give a little love and it all comes back to you.’ Which is a line from a song in Bugsy Malone, but my girls and I sing it a lot! Also, when I am feeling hesitant about big decisions, I always think of the last line from the Mary Oliver poem, The Summer Day, ‘Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?’ It reminds me to be brave.

Q&A.png

My haven at home is...

a very sunny spot at the end of my kitchen, you can often find me basking happily here.

THE design darling: Virginia Tupker

Maison_Haven_Organizers_MAISON_MUSE_MainImage_Tupker.jpg

Interior designer Virginia Tupker has long been on our radar (and not just because she’s a fellow Brit!) Earlier this year Architectural Digest dubbed her the ‘rising star of the interiors world’ and promptly added her to the coveted AD100 list. It’s not hard to see why. After honing her design aesthetic as home editor at Vogue, Tupker pivoted into interior design when shoe designer, Tabitha Simmons, hired her to decorate her new house. Since then Tupker has transformed the homes of a slew of tastemakers. There was the Southampton barn for Moda Operandi’s cofounder Lauren Santo Domingo. Then there was fashion writer Derek Blasberg’s Upper East Side abode (complete with a secret passage and a Gossip Room!). Virginia grew up in Chelsea, London and now lives in Connecticut with her husband and two gorgeous children.

Onto the Q&A…

Starting a Biz With Your Best Friend

MAISON_Mag_icon-lets-talk-about.png

Starting a biz with your best friend

What’s it really like to navigate entrepreneur life with your BFF? We’re sharing our start-up secrets.

Sept2018MaisonHaven-194.jpeg

Like all great ideas, HAVEN was born over a glass (or three) of wine. Could we turn our nerdy organizing addiction into a legitimate business? Could our style backgrounds (me: magazine editor; Jen: Burberry lawyer) bring a fresh angle to the home organizing industry? And, most important of all, could our friendship survive launching a business together? The answer to all three was an emphatic YES (this could have been the wine talking).

But the path from lightbulb moment to launch was l-o-n-g. It was hard not to get ahead of ourselves in the beginning. We were so energized by the idea of running our own show, and doing something we were passionate about. But we forced ourselves to slow down, to put in the research, to become experts in our field and to learn about our clients and competitors.

The single most important thing we did was to reach out to other female entrepreneurs for help. And once we started, we couldn’t stop. We were absolutely blown away by the talent around us. Why hadn’t we noticed – and celebrated - all these smart, brilliant women forging their own paths and blazing their own trails? And now, because we’re all in this together (a rising tide lifts all boats, right?), we want to pay it forward and share our advice with you.

Here are 4 lessons we learnt launching Maison Haven...

blacknumbers-01.png

Get the tough talk out of the way. This applies no matter how long you’ve known your business partner/team. Launching a business with another person means there’s Nowhere. To. Hide. So define your roles. Discuss finances. Work through any hard stuff that could come back to bite you later on. Jen and I have learnt more about each other in the past nine months than we have in 25 years. Sure, we’ve seen each other through heartbreak and career highs, through weddings and the birth of our kids, but nothing takes a friendship to the next level like a grumpy 5.30am phone call to plan your business strategy. After witnessing my colossal ability to procrastinate – a two-month quest to find the ‘perfect’ font for our website is just one example - Jen nicknamed me Steve Jobs (after the famously obsessive cofounder of Apple). And while it’s illuminating to watch Jen flex her lawyer muscle (there is no better negotiator around), I’ve never loved my high-flying biz partner more than the moment she confessed she didn’t know how to take a screenshot on her phone.

blacknumbers-02.png

Prepare to work your ass off. Launching a business is f*cking hard. Someone once told me you can work 40 hours a week for someone else, or 80 hours a week for yourself. Go in with your eyes wide open. And know that the business will only grow as fast as you do. So the answer is to put the time in, then put the time in again. With four kids between us, Jen and I snatch working hours when we can. This often means late nights and dawn starts (thank god for Touché Eclat).

blacknumbers-03.png

Play to your strengths. Aside from both being uber-organized (a definite plus when you’re launching a home organizing business), Jen and I have very different skillsets. So we use the ‘divide and conquer’ approach. As the grown-up in our partnership, Jen handles the big-girl-pants side of the business: registering the company, opening bank accounts, drawing up contracts, becoming fluent in Quickbooks – tasks that make my brain melt down. As a former magazine editor, I handle the creative side: the branding, the website, the words, the logo. While we both have opinions, we’re also smart enough to know when to back off and let the other person do their thing.

blacknumbers-04.png

Done is better than perfect. For all the perfectionists out there (yes, I’m guilty) resist the urge to tinker with every last detail. Do your due diligence, prepare as much as you can but know that sometimes you have to cross your fingers and hope for the best. What’s the worst that can happen? You fail? As Arianna Huffington once said: ‘Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the success’. So adopt Maison Haven’s ‘better an oops than a what if’ approach and go for it!
