HOW TO TRAVEL LIKE A PRO

Founder of the uber-cool travel app, GLimpse Guides, Jordan Rhodes knows how to vacation in style. She shares her pro-tips below!

unnamed (4).jpg

Can you name your most magical spot?

I usually fall in love with every place I visit, and my idea of magical is getting to know an unfamiliar culture. From that perspective Haiti was a truly beautiful, eye-opening country, but if I were recommending a place that everyone would love, I would probably say the Amalfi Coast for the enchanting sunsets and leisurely indulgence.

Still on your bucket list?

Every inch of the world! But hopefully I’ll get to see Morocco and Japan in the near future.

Can you share your pro-packing tips?

I love packing cubes. Each of my three kids has their own color cubes so their clothes stay easily organized in suitcases and hotel rooms. At Glimpse Guides, we’re working on developing our own line of cubes this year which is really exciting. To avoid overpacking, I make a list of what the kids and I will wear each day. Then I pack the cubes starting with the last day so that Day One’s outfits are on top.

What are your top tips for staying sane when travelling with kid?

Loads - and I mean LOADS - of snacks and activity books (a well-fed kid is a happy kid). Car seats on airplanes for toddlers (so you can strap them in and they can easily fall asleep). And an open mind. Don’t make too many plans or be too scheduled - kids get exhausted more easily when traveling and you need to roll with it.

What’s your signature travel look?

It depends where I’m going! My go-tos are Frame jeans, my Golden Goose’s sneakers, a button-down from Shirtini in Charleston or a white Cuyana t-shirt and Rick Owens blazer. Then I’ll add a Tom Ford tote and Mignonne Gavigan earrings for a pop of color.

What are your go-to travel products?

I never leave without my de Mamiel altitude oil, a portable charging device, Goop Nerd Alert chewables (I don’t drink caffeine so just one half keeps me energized all afternoon), an energy essential oil by Umi, a hydrating lavender mist by ARCONA, Rimowa luggage, and our Glimpse app because I really love using the map to find nearby restaurants and activities.

4 EASY PACKING HACKS

Follow our simple solutions and take the load off this vacay!

Serious case of Wanderlust at HAVEN HQ. With summer in our sights and plane tickets at the ready we can’t wait to kick off our shoes and explore.

Now to the fun part: packing (yes, really). Which packing tribe sounds more like you? The Type-A travelista who dusts off her suitcase two weeks before the trip, then strategizes and overthinks every. part. of. the. packing. process. Or the Serial Overpacker who grabs half her wardrobe the just as the cab arrives resulting in half-baked outfits and excess baggage fines (ouch). If either sound familiar, don’t fret. HAVEN has preflight prep down to a science. Follow these few simple steps to bring a bit more savvy into your travel.

The all-important list

list.jpg

Packing lists are a perennial fave. Not only do they invite you to get into the vibe of the destination but they are serious space savers when put into action. Create clear groupings and get writing. Or download HAVEN’s ultimate packing list. How? Sign up to our newsletter HAVEN LIVING to get the link!

Streamline your closet

lauren hutton.jpg

Simplify packing AND dressing on the other side. Keep your wardrobe capsule. By packing in the same color family you can layer pieces and change your look seamlessly. Throw in a striped tee and a flirty print dress and you’ve got all your bases covered. One final tip: don’t pack things, pack outfits. Lay each outfit on your bed, including jewellery, bags and shoes for each.

Pack smart

Travel Packing cubes .jpg

Suitcase a hot mess? Frustrated rummaging through it? Here’s what we love about packing cubes (and there’s a lot to love): they not only keep everything organized but they actually compress the clothes. File fold within the packing cubes for even more space! VSNOON’s neutral range are some of our faves. We’re also a fan of packing dresses on hangers. Huggable hangars take up very little room in your suitcase - and enable you to hang your delicates the moment you arrive.

Create a suitcase scent

vitruvi.jpg

A pro-tip from the HAVEN girls? Nothing says luxury like a bespoke scent when you open your case destination side. We love Vitruvi’s grapefruit oil for its light fresh scent and rejuvenating properties. Put a couple of drops on a cotton pad and stash in your suitcase. Bliss!

GET THE LOOK: LAUNDRY ROOM

This serene space turns laundry into a lust-worthy task with a few simple tweaks

Is it just us or does it feel like laundry has become an elevated artform? With the rise of highly covetable and beautiful-packaged products (hello The Laundress), and the Marie Kondo-inspired craze of file folding (huge fans over here), dare we say laundry has gone luxe? Pay attention to this often-forgotten zone and turn a mundane task into something, well, slightly less mundane. We’re sharing our secrets below.

dotnumbers-01.png

MAKE A VISUAL STATEMENT. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: make it pretty! You’re more likely to feel the luxe in laundering if you love the way your space looks. We love mixing textures (think colored baskets for cloths, white labelled bins for unsightly detergents and open-weave baskets for pretty products you like on display).

dotnumbers-02.png

MAKE IT PERSONAL. Our client has three children and two dogs. The laundry room needed to service this family of seven. So we added dedicated storage for the dog treats, leashes and grooming. We rely heavily on these white containers (beautifully labelled of course!) to contain the less-than-pretty items we all have in our lives.

dotnumbers-03.png

CATEGORIZE EVERYTHING. You know the drill. We mean pull everything out. Be ruthless. Create clear groupings. Then - and only then - organize. If you live in fear of running out (and own multiples of every product), consider employing a double-stacking system. The depth of this client’s cupboard allowed us to add additional containers with refills behind the ones you see on display. Just remember to check there first before buying any more!

LABEL EVERYTHING. Skip this stage at your peril. We need the system to keep functioning beautifully for our clients long after we leave, and we cannot overstate the importance of labelling. HAVEN loves using decals for a polished look, but a chalkboard label does the trick just as well.

HOW TO SPRING CLEAN (WITHOUT HARMING YOUR HOME)

Calling all clean freaks (um, us!) Here are 5 good reasons to banish the chemicals and overhaul your cleaning regime - for good

Laundromat Image.jpg

Whether your goal is to decrease the clutter and up the pretty or make a switch to more eco-friendly cleaning products the time is now. Never before have cleaning products been this lust-worthy. Beautiful aesthetics + kind to the earth = we are sold. Here are five reasons to make the switch. Your home (and health) will thank you!

maisonhaven_numbers-01.png

Save time

Busy, busy, busy? Liquid concentrates should be your new best friend! Forget highly specialized cleaning agents (think Lysol for the kitchen and Chlorox for the bathroom). Time to reset, condense, and declutter. Most concentrated cleaners pack a more efficient punch and can be used on multiple surfaces in the home.

439e85c6ab9b427631d3e8b5783f1832.jpg

maisonhaven_numbers-02.png

Save Space

It goes without saying that if you are condensing five products into one you are freeing up some valuable space. Up the pretty by decanting detergent into big glass jars, or stashing products into baskets. Who says doing laundry has to be a drag!

maisonhaven_numbers-03.png

Save money

This is the most obvious and immediate benefit. Hurrah! Over at HAVEN we do the happy dance and run to Veronica Beard stat. All joking aside, there may be some serious savings to be had. “The price per ounce of a cleaner made from concentrate compared to RTU cleaners can save you as much as half of your yearly cleaning budget,” says Marilee Nelson, co founder of Branch Basics.

61a902e8967b3943a9dbc820cfd412d2.jpg

maisonhaven_numbers-04.png

Save energy

Less waste is an obvious win for every household. Not only are you reducing the amount of plastic packaging in your home but many claim that the actual production of concentrated cleaners saves natural resources requiring less processing, less labelling, reduced filling of bottles and reduced plastics use. Win win!

Inside and Out

At HAVEN we embrace the holistic philosophy: transform from the inside out. We cross check the products we use against the EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning and it is shocking how easy it is to miss the mark. The good news? With so many clean choices on the market it’s never been easier to make the switch.

5 WAYS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME AGAIN

Stuck in a home rut? This Valentine’s Day follow our easy-fix, rekindle-the-magic solutions and show your home some love

A home is like a marriage. Think about it. Once upon a time your home was Mr/Ms Right. Remember when you first moved in? Those heady days when everything was shiny and new, and just stepping over the threshold made your heart flutter.

But fast-forward a few years and the gloss has worn off. Life/kids/mortgage get in the way and, all of a sudden, your home forgets to take the trash out one too many times and OH MY GOD IF IT LEAVES ITS PANTS ON THE FLOOR ONE MORE TIME, WE’RE GOING TO *!@%!&@

Deep breaths. You’re in a home rut. What to do? Sure, you could move but moving is expensive. So is redecorating. What if we told you there were a few simple steps you could take to rekindle the magic? Teeny-tiny steps that build incrementally and remind you why your home was The One in the first place. So, pick one step or pick them all. Whatever you do, commit to the relationship - and prepare to fall in love again!

Fire up the flower power

Sept2018MaisonHaven-108.jpg

There’s a reason why every house tour you’ve ever clicked on features fresh flowers in every photograph! Flowers brighten any space. We are huge fans of single-flower bouquets (preferably all-white) but go with your gut. Homegrown flowers lift the soul and won’t break the bank. Neither will a simple houseplant. Also - shhhhh - it’s ok to fake it. Faux flowers last forever and are perfect for people who have a tendency to kill their plants (um, us).

Cut the clutter

Sept2018MaisonHaven-8.jpg

Did you know the average American household contains a shocking 300,000 items? Free up some space and your home will feel twice the size. Overwhelmed? Break it down into zones, then tackle the zone that makes you most want to scream the most first. We always advise clients to prioritize their entryway. How you enter/exit sets the tone for the whole house. Also: baskets hide a multitude of sins.

Create a signature scent

83c0c64474907765db7956bb60995ea3.jpg

Don’t wait for a special occasion to fill your home with fragrance. Indulge yourself (and that’s an order!) Whether you’re Team Candle or Team Diffuser, the secret is to use just the right amount of scent so the overall effect isn’t cloying. Love candles? Go for beeswax or soy-wax: they burn more cleanly than paraffin ones. And when in doubt, choose citrus. It refreshes, soothes, and smells clean all at once. Yum!

Reworking your whole house feels overwhelming? So start small and make over a corner. Love the view from your bedroom window? Find a way to make the most of it. Add an upholstered bench or a window seat. Lusting after a reading nook? A floor lamp + a side table for your coffee mug + a luxe blanket et voila! Pick a spot that makes you feel calm and centered and build from there.

GET THE LOOK: HAVEN ART ROOM

This blissful kids’ space is yours for the taking. We show you how…

Who else feels like keeping their kids’ playroom tidy is like nailing Jell-o to a wall? Ha! We’ve been there, trust us. With four kids between us, we’ve had days where we’re winning the decluttering battle and days where we want to scream into a pillow (don’t pretend you haven’t done this). One thing we’ve learnt over the years is: You. Need. A. System. Get the system right and the rest falls into place. We’re sharing our secrets below!

home organizing professional organizer declutter playroom kids space art room

dotnumbers-01.png

MAKE IT PERSONAL. Our client’s four children range from one to eight years old. So we divided their activity and reading books into age-appropriate categories, and then store each category in acrylic magazine holders featuring each child’s name. It simplifies the process: they know exactly where to find their books, and they know exactly where to put them back (which, let’s face it is every parent’s goal 🙌🏻). We also gave each child a personalized storage container to hold their precious ‘works in progress’. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s that kids LOVE anything with their name on it. So personalize away!

playroom kids space organize professional organizer declutter

dotnumbers-02.png

SYSTEMS WITHIN SYSTEMS. This is a mistake lots of people make. They break things down into categories, then throw everything into one storage container. The result? A hot mess! Each of our white bins contains its own system. We love to throw in these organizers to keep smaller items in check.

dotnumbers-03.png

MAKE A VISUAL STATEMENT. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: make it pretty! You’re more likely to keep it tidy if you love the way it looks. We stored colorful craft supplies in transparent jars (to make them extra-safe for the littlest kids, we opted for plastic jars, rather than glass). Not only does it make it easier to find/return them to the right place, but they look so inviting!

playroom kids space declutter home organizer greenwich

LABEL EVERYTHING. Skip this stage at your peril. The goal is to train your kids to stick to the system. Note that every every white storage container is clearly labeled - there’s literally no excuse (ha, try telling that to a three year old but we can dream, right?!) HAVEN loves using decals for a polished look, but a chalkboard label does the trick just as well.

dotnumbers-04.png

kids zone playroom declutter organize professional organizer declutter greenwich connecticut
dotnumbers-05.png

CREATE ZONES. It’s important to consider the room as a whole before designing a system that works. We wanted to store all the messy art supplies in the two gorgeous cabinets. To make them function beautifully, we put everyday supplies within reach of little hands, and stocked the overflow in ‘Refill’ bins at the very top. To keep things looking super-stylish, we hid the ugly activity kits in the cupboards at the bottom. Then we maximized the space in the central island by stacking coloring pencils and crayons in drawer organizers, and leaving out the most-used crayons in the turntable. Voila! A stylish system that works for everyone. Now it’s your turn!

Find your happy!

This ‘Hunt for Happiness’ week, we share our mood-boosting tips to overhaul your mind, body and home. Prepare to feel awesome!

It seems fitting to kick off “Hunt for Happiness’ week with a deep dive into the world of decluttering. And we’re talking decluttering in the most holistic sense: head, home and body! It is no secret that the spaces we inhabit have a major impact on our mood and our relationships. Once your physical world is in order, you can more effectively tune into your internal world. So it’s time to integrate the approach. Here are HAVEN’S top tips to nourish your head, home and body!

Plan it out, write it down, let the kids input (if you dare). Believe us when we say: it’s life-changing. No more bad decisions. Take the guesswork out of the supper schedule. Not only will you save time in your week, you will buy less, and therefore clutter less. Hurrah! Want your very own HAVEN menu planner? Inquire here for details.

HOME: Time to detox that kitchen. We’re talking plastic (no more endocrine disrupting chemicals touching our food, pretty please). Here are three ways to limit plastic contamination and use:

(i) avoid BPA in anything that touches food. We love decanting everything into these glass jars

(ii) purchase food like cereal and grains from the bulk bins using a reusable container (serious $ savings here too #forthewin)

(iii) eat real whole foods - fresh foods equate to less packaging and less previous plastic contact. Let’s purge that plastic.

5 New Year's resolutions for your home

Start 2019 as you mean to go on: clutter-free and in control. Even easier if you follow our step-by-step guide!

haven home organizer organize pantry design kitchen interior

How many times have you kicked off the year determined to whip your home into shape, only to find things sliding back to normal by February? We hear you. Living an organized life can feel like a lofty goal, but it’s 100% achievable with the right system in place. The key is to identify your organizing style and build a system around it. Break it down into manageable goals. Rather than ‘I want to organize my house’, which feels vague and unwieldy, switch it to: ‘I will create a system that makes my pantry work’. Or ‘I will create the space my entryway needs to function’. Take it a room at a time. Make it specific. Give yourself a fighting chance to stick to the system. Read on to discover the five resolutions that will overhaul any space, and transform it for good. Let’s do this!

maisonhaven_numbers-01.jpg

I vow to….create space

Closet organizing home organizer professional wardrobe

Skip this step at your peril. Take one room at a time and make a ruthless choice to trash/donate/consign all the things you don't need. Some people advise starting small with an easy-to-tackle spot in your room. We say: go big or go home. Nothing will give you a greater sense of achievement than overhauling your most lived-in area. Once you’ve nailed the kitchen - or playroom, or whichever space makes you scream - the rest of the house will seem like small fry. Don’t believe us? Fun fact: look at the photograph above. Our client was struggling to part with her excess clothes, so we pulled out a third of her closet and photographed what was left. She was blown away by how much better her closet looked. Not only was there space for her clothes to breathe, it was much easier to create outfits because everything was visible. She vowed to adopt the ‘one in one out’ rule and remove one item from her wardrobe any time she was adding to it. Remember, sometimes you need a visual kickstart. Also remember: space is your friend.

maisonhaven_numbers-02.png

I vow to…transform my entryway

home organizer greenwich new york connecticut mudroom entryway hallway professional declutter

There’s a reason we spend time getting clients’ entry points right. The way you enter your home sets the tone for the rest of the house. If your entryway is a car-crash of coats, shoes, bags and other paraphernalia, then shoot this zone to the top of your to-do list. Design a drop zone that works for you. Short on space? Your system could be as simple as a standalone coat rack or hooks behind a door. Got drawers? Invest in some dividers. Finally, adopt our ‘60-second rule’. When you arrive home, spend 60 seconds putting things in their place. Not only does it clear your head but it makes it easier to leave the house, too.

maisonhaven_numbers-03.png

I vow to…make the effort

home organizer greenwich new york connecticut kitchen cupboard declutter organize organizing

Yes, we’ll share our decluttering secrets, cheerlead the hell out of you, and help you design a system that works. But maintaining your system? That’s up to you. Be honest with yourself. If you truly want a home that works hard - a home that looks and feel great - then repeat after us: I will make the effort. There are no shortcuts. Once the system is in place, STICK TO IT. Did you know that 80% of cleaning is picking stuff up and putting it away? Utter madness. Tidy a room before you leave it. Return items to their place. Don’t leave a mess to fester. Get into the habit of doing it as you go along. Trust us, the pay-off is worth it.

maisonhaven_numbers-04.png

I vow to…live smart

home organizer greenwich new york connecticut bathroom declutter organize organizing

Organizing your home shouldn’t break the bank. Tweak your mindset with these steps…

  • I will use what I have. Finish the last inch of toothpaste, the last drops of olive oil, the last roll of kitchen paper. Don’t buy multiples of things. You’ll waste less, consume less, and bring less clutter into your home.

  • I will adopt the one-in-one-out rule. Make a pact with yourself to donate/consign an item each time you buy something new. This will be EXCRUCIATING in the beginning. But once the habit is formed, you’ll wonder what took you so long. Keep a container handy in each zone for items to purge. Then do it (this is very important).

  • I will Shop My Home. Anything can be used to contain your things. At HAVEN we love to think outside the (storage) box. We’ve used everything from vintage hampers to upcycled shoe boxes. Look for things that can be repurposed. Take the bar cart in the photo above. With a few simple tweaks we transformed it into bathroom storage. We used a cake stand to corral beauty products, acrylic magazine holders for hair tools, and an old cookie jar for nail polish. It doesn’t have to be expensive to work.

maisonhaven_numbers-05.png

I vow to…make it pretty

home organizer greenwich new york connecticut kitchen cupboard fridge declutter organize organizing

One of our best-kept secrets? We make a visual statement with the way we organize. We color-code. We use stylish storage. We go the extra mile. Why? There are real psychological benefits to maintaining this kind of visual order. Dr. Sally Augustin, PhD, an environmental psychologist says it’s possible that an organized and visually stimulating space can make its owner feel calmer and less stressed. She says: “Bring the complexity in your refrigerator down to a moderate level, and when you open the door, you would have a positive response.” That positive response means you’re more likely to keep it that way. Amen to that!

HOW TO LAUNCH A BUSINESS (BY THE WOMEN WHO’VE DONE IT)

This National Women Entrepreneur Day, our favorite #girlbosses share their start-up secrets

Sept2018MaisonHaven-53.jpg

Like all great ideas, HAVEN was born over a glass (or three) of wine. Could we turn our nerdy organizing addiction into a legitimate business? Could our style backgrounds (me: magazines; Jen: Burberry) bring a fresh angle to the home organizing industry? And, most important of all, could our friendship survive launching a business together? The answer to all three was an emphatic YES (this could have been the wine talking).

But the path from lightbulb moment to launch was l-o-n-g. It was hard not to get ahead of ourselves in the beginning. We were so energized by the idea of running our own show, and doing something we were passionate about. But we forced ourselves to slow down, to put in the research, to become experts in our field and to learn about our clients and competitors.

The single most important thing we did was to reach out to other female entrepreneurs for help. And once we started, we couldn’t stop. We were absolutely blown away by the talent around us. Why hadn’t we noticed – and celebrated - all these smart, brilliant women forging their own paths and blazing their own trails? They had so much advice to offer. And, because we’re all in this together (a rising tide lifts all boats, right?), we want to share their advice with you.

Before we do, here are 4 lessons we learnt launching Haven…

dotnumbers-01.png

Get the tough talk out of the way. This applies no matter how long you’ve known your business partner/team. Launching a business with another person means there’s Nowhere. To. Hide. So define your roles. Discuss finances. Work through any hard stuff that could come back to bite you later on. Jen and I have learnt more about each other in the past nine months than we have in 22 years. Sure, we’ve seen each other through heartbreak and career highs, through weddings and the birth of our kids, but nothing takes a friendship to the next level like a grumpy 5.30am phone call to plan your business strategy. After witnessing my colossal ability to procrastinate – a two-month quest to find the ‘perfect’ font for our website is just one example - Jen nicknamed me Steve Jobs (after the famously obsessive cofounder of Apple). And while it’s illuminating to watch Jen flex her lawyer muscle (there is no better negotiator around), I’ve never loved my high-flying biz partner more than the moment she confessed she didn’t know how to take a screenshot on her phone.

dotnumbers-02.png

Prepare to work your ass off. Launching a business is f*cking hard. Someone once told me you can work 40 hours a week for someone else, or 80 hours a week for yourself. Go in with your eyes wide open. And know that the business will only grow as fast as you do. So the answer is to put the time in, then put the time in again. With four kids between us, Jen and I snatch working hours when we can. This often means late nights and dawn starts (thank god for Touché Eclat).

dotnumbers-03.png

Play to your strengths. Aside from both being uber-organized (a definite plus when you’re launching a home organizing business), Jen and I have very different skillsets. So we use the ‘divide and conquer’ approach. As the grown-up in our partnership, Jen handles the big-girl-pants side of the business: registering the company, opening bank accounts, drawing up contracts, becoming fluent in Quickbooks – tasks that make my brain melt down. As a former magazine editor, I handle the creative side: the branding, the website, the words, the logo. While we both have opinions, we’re also smart enough to know when to back off and let the other person do their thing.

dotnumbers-04.png

Done is better than perfect. For all the perfectionists out there (yes, I’m guilty) resist the urge to tinker with every last detail. Do your due diligence, prepare as much as you can but know that sometimes you have to cross your fingers and hope for the best. What’s the worst that can happen? You fail? As Arianna Huffington once said: ‘Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the success’. So adopt HAVEN’s ‘better an oops than a what if’ approach and go for it!

Now it’s time to hear from the (real) experts…

Jordan Rhodes

founder of travel blog, Glimpse Guides

My secret to launching a successful business is… slow, steady persistence.

Before I set up my own company I worked as... a personal assistant to the president of a fashion design and manufacturing company. From that job I learned that anyone can start a business if they put their mind to it, and I also learned that I wanted to do something creative with my life.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... to plan more. I launched my website very quickly and struggled with its identity for a while. I now have products launching in the near future but this time I am not rushing anything.

My proudest moment so far is... being mentioned in TOWN&COUNTRY magazine, and forming my charitable platform, Give a Glimpse.

Leslie Gregory

cofounder of the micro-consulting
app, Accomplish

My secret to launching a successful business is… wait, there is a secret? Truthfully, the reason we have an app/business at all is because we remain flexible. Someone told me a long time ago that the “key” to starting any business is the ability to identify home and pivot as many times as necessary to return to the vision.

Before I set up my own company I worked as... Director of Buying & Planning for fashion label Mulberry, North America.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... to slow down and wait for the product to lead.

My proudest moment so far is... watching people download Accomplish with the intention to work in their field and in their neighborhood. The professional expertise in the Greenwich CT area is endless... work local, hire local!

Julia Dzafic

founder of the lifestyle blog, Lemon Stripes

My secret to launching a successful business is… to save up before you launch so that you don’t end up in debt. My husband and I have both launched successful businesses (Lemon Stripes and Countdown Fitness) and were able to do it without any help or any debt! That will put you ahead of the game from the get-go.

Before I set up my own company I worked as… Marketing Director for food and wellness companies. I love the creativity of digital marketing and will always have a passion for it!

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... not a thing! I am so proud of the way we’ve launched our businesses, and I’ve learned so much throughout the process.

My proudest moment so far is... launching a line of mommy-and-me fleeces with one of my favorite companies, Dudley Stephens!

Christina Schwefel

founder of Forme Barre Fitness

My secret to launching a successful business is… having a strong team in place that loves what they do! I love working with a group of women who are genuinely engaged and want to teach a method that’s safe, effective, and informed.

Before I set up my own company I worked as a... Psychotherapist and Professor (I still teach but I no longer see any patients in private practice)

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... this one is not for public consumption LOL!

My proudest moment so far is... anytime I hear from a client about how our method has changed their life for the better; whether that be alleviating back pain, transforming their physique, providing necessary me time, or improving posture. Those stories never get old and make my day every time I hear one.

Annabelle Torgman Degrazio
& Annie Jensen Chapur

founders of home accessories brand,
TAJA Collection

Our secret to launching a successful business is… building a strong team and always looking ahead! We are both problem solvers so nothing can stop us.

Before we set up our own company we worked as a… lawyers: Annie was a corporate lawyer and Annabelle was a litigator at the same Big Law firm in Miami. We met on our first day of the job and became close friends very quickly!

If we could change one thing about the way we launched it would be... absolutely nothing! We set a launch date and stuck to it. Not everything was perfect when we launched (as we would’ve liked), it was important for us to hit the ground running.

Our proudest moment so far is... now that we are coming on our second year, seeing the growth every day from where we were a year ago is beyond gratifying.

Lauren Stephens

co-founder of fleece brand, Dudley Stephens

My secret to launching a successful business is… to learn to look at failures (there will be a lot) as opportunities to grow or change something moving forward.

Before I set up my own company I worked as a... fashion and beauty public relations
director.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... pad in extra time for any launch, you will always need the extra week – or month if you can!

My proudest moment so far is... seeing our collaboration with Eva Amurri Martino from Happily Eva After on People.com!

Stephanie Trotta

founder of fashion blog,
The Girl Guide

My secret to launching a successful business is… to be authentic, be original, be you.

Before I set up my own company I worked as a… retailer and stylist for brands like Ralph Lauren and Theory.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be... not waiting so long! I kept pushing back my launch date because I wanted everything to be perfect. What I’ve learned is you can’t sweat the small stuff and it’s OK for your business to grow with you. I’m a type-A perfectionist so sometimes it’s hard for me to let things go.
My proudest moment so far is… helping a client re-create her wardrobe and style her closet after losing a significant amount of weight. She had been working on herself for almost a year and it was an honor to be part of that transformation. We were both crying when it was all over!

Eleen Craig

founder of graphic design studio Gal & Fellow

My secret to launching a successful business is… believing in yourself. Don’t let doubt distract you from what you’re trying to achieve. The only thing holding you back is you. Yes, it will be hard, but if you’re willing to put in the hours (and there will be a lot of hours!), then you can do it. Worrying is a waste of time. Focus on dreaming instead - and get busy.

Before I set up my own company I worked as an... an in-house graphic designer for News UK. It wasn’t my dream job, but it taught me that good design is collaborative, and the closer you can work with the client/developer/illustrator, sharing ideas and visions, the better the results will be.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched, it would be... to have done it sooner and bigger. Like a lot of new moms, I initially felt under-confident. In hindsight, I should have just backed myself and plunged in wholeheartedly.

My proudest moment so far is... being commissioned by The White Company to illustrate and animate the promotional material for the launch of their first American store in New York.

Liz Ariola

founder of mom blog,
Mrs Nipple

My secret to launching a successful business is… surrounding yourself with the right people. You can’t do it alone.

Before I set up my own company I worked as an... I actually juggle two jobs right now, Mrs. Nipple and the job I have been doing since I graduated college. I will be sharing my career path in February when I walk away from my full time job and 100% step into Mrs. Nipple. Stay tuned!

If I could change one thing about the way I launched, it would be... I wish I did it sooner!! I over thought it for entirely too long.

My proudest moment so far is... celebrating Mrs. Nipple’s one year anniversary!

asha.png

Ashley McCormick

Founder of JEWELRY BRAND, ASHA

My secret to launching a successful business is…find something you are passionate about and do it! Waking up every morning with passion and a singular focus I find to be of paramount importance (because some days are harder than others!) Once you've launched a business, having an amazing team is also critical. Even though I started ASHA as a solo-preneur years ago, I'm lucky to have an incredible team of women who help me run the business. It's a joy to collaborate, create and bounce ideas off each other and also problem-solve together.

Before I set up my own company I worked as a...I have always been an entrepreneur and started my business in college. As a child and even a teenager I was making things like ribbon belts...sourcing belt buckles on eBay and selling them to friends and classmates. Throughout high school and college I interned in advertising at McCann Erickson and in fashion at Tommy Hilfiger. Those experiences were invaluable in teaching me about the worlds of fashion and marketing.

If I could change one thing about the way I launched it would be...I really wouldn't change a thing! I'm glad I launched with a sense of naiveté and not knowing what was ahead, as the unforeseen may have seemed daunting. I still feel like I've just launched and have so much to do and so many opportunities ahead.
