MAISON_HAVEN_IN_A_BOX_Closet_Edit.png

We never thought we’d be thanking Covid, but here we are. Last Spring, as the pandemic raged, we realized something. There was no shortage of people needing help finding order in the chaos. Confined to their homes, our community was increasingly fed up with their clutter. As clients continued to ask for our help, we began to evaluate. Was there an easier, safer way to reach more people and help them reimagine their homes? Then we had an idea. Could we create a one-of-a-kind home-makeover experience, and deliver it directly to your door? Spoiler: we could. Covid, or no Covid, this new product is a game-changer. It’s an organizing experience like no other. A year in the making, we are thrilled to finally share it with you! So, yes, thank you, Covid. Without you, Haven in a Box might never have seen the light of day - and, for that, we’re truly grateful!

Organize Your Workout Gear Like a Pro

MAISON_Mag_icon-fast-five.png

Organize your workout gear like a pro

These quick wins are guaranteed to transform your fitness zone fast!

IMG_0093.jpg

We’re thrilled to introduce you to our new Fast 5 series. Whichever zone we’re tackling, we’ll distill our technique into five fast steps that will deliver maximum results in the minimum time. Let’s kick off with every closet’s nemesis: workout gear. As our obsession with chic athleisure grows, so do the piles in our closets. But that changes today. Read on for our Fast 5.

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-11.png

Edit

Pull e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g out. Tops, leggings, sports bras, socks, sweatshirts, you name it, it goes on the bed. Turn up the music and go to town. Sort into categories and ditch anything you no longer wear, or doesn’t make you feel a million bucks (life’s too short). Organize by clothing type (leggings, tanks, sports bras etc), or by sport (yoga, running, spinning etc).

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-12.png

Pick a zone

Assess your closet with fresh eyes. Where can you create a dedicated Workout Zone? Can you reclaim a couple of drawers? Bingo. Excess hanging space? There’s your answer. And if you’re short on space, don’t panic. Grab some matching baskets and use them like drawers. Wherever you land, make sure your workout gear is in one place.

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-13.png

Space it out

Even in the largest closets we tackle, we never waste space. If you’re organizing into baskets or drawers, then file-fold (to see our fitness file-folding tutorial, click here). You’d be amazed how much more you can fit. Add adjustable drawer organizers to customize the layout. Hanging? Uniform hangers take your closet from wah-wah to wow. For teeny spaces, a 4-tier hanger makes use of the height.

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-14.png

Label

Now you have a functioning Workout Zone, let’s maintain the system. The easiest way to do this is to label. Add bin clips to baskets and rod dividers to hanging rails. Pro tip: stick a discreet label to the lip of each drawer to highlight what each row contains.

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-10.png

Style it up

Yup, you heard us. Our mantra is: a space that looks beautiful is more likely to stay that way. So color-code your drawers or hanging rails. Start with the dark colors and progress to light. Make a feature of your yoga mats. Throw your favorite baseball caps onto a shelf and style them up. Make a visual statement!

Help! My Home Needs an Eco-Makeover

MAISON_Mag_icon-ask-the-pros.png

Q: Help! My home needs an eco-makeover

A: We hear ya! Sustainability is always on our minds when we set foot into a client’s home. We’re sharing our no-brainer ways to go green at home…

maison_haven_organizers_bathroom_caddy.png

Blog_dot.png

*Consider the why

We don’t need to preach to you all the reasons why choosing sustainable storage and methods is preferable (unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade!) However, if the melting ice caps and starving polar bears aren’t enough to kickstart your motivation, try this: the average American wastes twelve days a year looking for things they own but can’t find, and collectively we spend $2.7 billion replacing them! So, shift your mindset. Understand why you’re streamlining. Our mantra is this: everything has a place. If you know exactly where things are, it you’ll save almost a fortnight a year (and the icebergs in the process #winning).

Blog_dot.png

*Shop your home

We use this technique all the time. Rather than purchasing brand new storage solutions, we scour around for items we can repurpose. Take the bathroom storage in the photo above. We upcycled a beautiful bar cart, then added storage items we found around the house: a cookie jar, a cake stand and an old candle holder. Look around your home and get creative. Try shoe boxes to house paper storage, Tupperware lids to keep drawers neat and magazine racks to store veggies. However, if you are buying products, our golden rule is this: measure, measure, measure. People spend a fortune on storage products that don’t work in their space. Take the extra time with a tape measure to get it right.

Blog_dot.png

*Green your clean

There’s no excuse to use toxic products in your home. We’ve tested a few different brands and here are our thoughts. Blueland, LOVE. They send a one-off package of chic bottles, then refills in tablet form in recyclable packaging. Grove Collaborative is another hit. We also love Food52’s Wool Dryer Balls. Not only do they cut down drying time by 25%. Pro tip: add a couple of drops of essential oils to each ball and your laundry comes out smelling beautiful (we opt for grapefruit every time!)

Blog_dot.png

*Rethink your closet

Forget fast fashion, the smart woman’s closet is all about sustainability. That starts with taking care of your clothes. We keep a closet kit handy complete with steamer and fabric defuzzer. And we use The Laundress’s non-toxic products to keep our clothes looking fresh (their Wool & Cashmere Shampoo is a Maison Haven staple). Love that dress but don’t love the way it makes you feel? Before giving up on it, take it to a tailor. Same goes for any broken jewelry, handbags or shoes. My favorite Lanvin sandals are on their third pair of soles! And if you are doing a closet edit, don’t throw anything out. Instead donate to Goodwill or consign anything designer. We love The Real Real for hassle-free consignment. They’ll grab your stash straight from your doorstep.

Blog_dot.png

*Kickstart your kitchen

The sky’s the limit when it comes to sustainable kitchen solutions. We love swapping out plastic for pretty glass storage. It increases visibility which saves you time and money (no more rooting around at the back of the spice cupboard!) We also love using bamboo turntables where possible as bamboo is a low-impact material. Where possible, swap out plastic when you’re grocery shopping. Use net bags to hold fruit and veggies, and bulk-buy spices, nuts and seeds, then decant into reusable glass containers when you get home. Our final tip? Meal plan. Figure out exactly what you need for the week’s cooking. Not only does planning ahead eliminate waste, it encourages healthy habits (bye-bye cookies).

Homework Room

Homework room

We take you behind-the-scenes of a project and break down exactly how we did it. Follow our guide and whip your kids’ workspace into shape, fast!

E3EB73A7-269D-42B0-B442-16EE476D2DF4_photos_v2_x4.jpg

The brief

Turn this homework room into a productive, organized space for two teenage children. The approach: we used Maison Haven’s signatures 3-step technique: edit, organize, style. We worked with the client to edit out anything that didn’t belong in this space: old schoolwork (which we archived into pretty white files), old schoolbooks (which we donated) and trash.

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_homework_room_white_containers.png

1. white containers

These are our hardest-working product! They’re chic, simple and easy to keep clean. Plus they come in a variety of sizes, which makes them extra versatile. We used the largest size here. Then we peppered narrow acrylic containers in between to house files and paper.

GET THE LOOK: White plastic storage bin

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_zones.png

2. zones

We designated the left hand cupboard the Craft Zone and the right hand cupboard the Schoolwork Zone. Keeping them separate helped shape the flow of the room.

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_homework_room_haxagon_insert.png

3. system

We like to add inserts into every container we use to keep things neat. Here, the hexagon inserts maximized the space. Plus how inviting do craft supplies look when they’re decanted!

GET THE LOOK: Tall insert

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_homework_room_drawers.png

4. drawers

We tamed the drawer chaos by adding acrylic dividers to customize the space. Each child was given a dedicated drawer, then we used two for general stationery supplies.

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_homework_room_stickers.png

5. label

We applied our custom labels to each container. This serves two purposes. One: it makes the system easy to maintain as everyone knows where things live. Two: it adds a dose of chic to the simple, white containers.

GET THE LOOK: Custom labels

maison_haven_organizers_style_sheet_books.png

5. books

We color-coded the books because...why the hell not! We like to make a visual statement with the way we organize. A space that looks beautiful is more likely to stay that way.

Fun fact

Can you spot the label-less container? No matter how prepared we are, every job throws up a wild card. Our edit was so productive that we ended up with a spare container, which is no bad thing. Giving clients space to grow is a key part of what we do (and don’t worry, we sent her a label once she made up her mind what the container was for!)

Refresh Your Home

MAISON_Mag_icon-fast-five.png

Refresh your home

Sick of staring at the same four walls? Follow our easy upgrades and show your home some love (no power tool required!)

Image: Eye Swoon

Image: Eye Swoon

Something about lockdown has us nesting. On steroids. First it was the spice cupboard, then it was the bookshelves. By now, we know every square inch of our home and are itching to rejig and refresh. The good news? It’s totally normal. Quarantine is forcing us to consider our surroundings in ways we haven’t before. What if we told you there were a few simple steps you could take to rekindle the magic? Teeny-tiny steps that build incrementally and make your home feel new again. Read on for our fast five.

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-11.png

Fire up flower power

There’s a reason why every house tour you’ve ever clicked on features fresh flowers in every photograph! Flowers brighten any space. We are huge fans of single-flower bouquets (preferably all-white) but go with your gut. Subscriptions are the ultimate indulgence but homegrown flowers lift the soul and won’t break the bank. Neither will a simple houseplant. Also - shhhhh - it’s ok to fake it. Faux flowers last forever and are perfect for people who have a tendency to kill their plants (um, us).

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-12.png

Restyle your bedding

It’s where you start and end your day so your bed should make you feel like a million bucks. Plus getting a good night’s sleep in today’s environment is more important than ever. We heart Parachute’s linen sheets for an extra-luxurious feel (and their Cloud cotton quilt is to die for). Keep the colorway simple - think white, stone or blush. Heaven!

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-13.png

Switch up your art

This is a quick fix but an effective one. One or two new pieces (they don’t have to break the bank) go a long way to freshening up a space. We LOVE a gallery wall. If you’re nervous about committing (and we hear you), we recommend these fantastic gallery wall shelves. You can mix and match your art without ever having to hammer in a picture hook. Perfect for the easily bored/inspired…!

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-14.png

Signature scent

Don’t wait for a special occasion to fill your home with fragrance. Whether you’re Team Candle or Team Diffuser, the secret is to use just the right amount of scent so the overall effect isn’t cloying. It’s no secret that we are obsessed with Vitruvi’s stone diffuser (we both have the white one). Love candles? We collaborated with cool-girl brand Taja Collection on a chic citrus-scented candle. It refreshes, soothes, and smells clean all at once. Yum!

MAISON_Mag_fast5_numbers-10.png

Transform a corner

Reworking your whole house feels overwhelming? So start small and make over a corner. Love the view from your bedroom window? Find a way to make the most of it. Add an upholstered bench or a window seat. Lusting after a reading nook? A floor lamp + a side table for your coffee mug + a luxe blanket et voila! Pick a spot that makes you feel calm and centered and build from there.

How Do I Make the Most of a Small Pantry?

MAISON_Mag_icon-ask-the-pros.png

Q: My pantry is a single cupboard. How do I make the most of the small space?

A: Pantries are our bread and butter (excuse the pun) so we have a multitude of tricks up our sleeve, no matter how small your space….

maison-haven-ask-the-pros-pantry.jpg

Blog_dot.png

*

Edit.

The smaller the space, the tighter the edit. Before we started this edit, we didn’t just ask our client what her family eats, we asked how they eat. What’s the breakfast routine? Do cereal and snacks need to be on a lower shelf so little hands can access? Is pasta a staple? Rule of thumb is this: anything you’re reaching for more than twice a week needs to be prime real estate. No bending down, no reaching up high. Then check use by dates and weed out anything old or that you know you won’t eat. Ensure you’re creating a system for the food you actually use and love.

Blog_dot.png

*

Categorize.

Once we purged, we grouped items into zones: Breakfast, Pasta, Dried Goods etc. Breaking a space down into zones is like a brain map. Next time you open your pantry door, you’ll know exactly where to reach for cereal, potato chips or pasta. It saves time and effort (win win).

Blog_dot.png

*

Know your storage.

The large white baskets are fantastic for pantries and are super versatile. We always add inserts to keep things neat. The smaller baskets are a real crowd-pleaser. We use these to store items that pack a visual punch. Other space-saving tricks? Turntables. They maximize space and make things easy to reach. We also added square acrylic containers to the bottom shelf to house excess salty snacks. Label everything otherwise the system will fall apart. For extra polish, we add our custom labels.

maison-haven-ask-the-pros-pantry-snacks.jpg

Blog_dot.png

Decant.

Yep, we love to purge plastic. Where possible we decant goods into sustainable glass containers. Not only does it elevate the look, but you’re more likely to use what you see (plus it makes shopping for groceries so much easier). Here we decanted pasta and cereal. But items like flour, sugar and grains really lend themselves to being set free (make sure you use jars with a seal for items like flour). Pro tip: add cooking instructions to the jar. We use our custom cooking labels, but a chalk pen underneath the lid works well.

maison-haven-ask-the-pros-pantry-past.jpg

Blog_dot.png

*

Refill system.

It’s all very well designing a beautiful system, but you need to be realistic. A too-rigid system is stifling. We always factor in a refill area for any multiples or excess. Because space was tight here, we stashed the refill basket behind the cereal on the top shelf. Just remember to always, always check your refills before your next grocery order!
